G is a 24 hour digital bureau: Hours after the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) issued a letter withdrawing its plea to celebrate February 14 as ‘Cow Hugging Day’, Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Maitra took a dig at the Modi government over the issue. On Twitter, Maitra said that he has to make a new plan for Valentine’s Day or February 14 as ‘Cow Hugging Day’ will not be celebrated.

The Animal Welfare Board of India withdrew its plea urging people to observe February 14 as ‘Cow Hug Day’. In a statement, the AWBI said, ‘As per the directions of the competent authority and the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, the application issued by the Animal Welfare Board of India for celebrating Cow Hug Day on February 14, 2023 has been withdrawn’.

“What a pity – having to make new plans for Valentine’s Day,” Maitra said in a tweet.

AWBI’s appeal sparked controversy and sparked a meme fest on Twitter. Many have started sharing old videos of BJP leaders eating beef.

Earlier, to celebrate the ‘Vedic tradition’ and the immense benefits of a cow, the board urged people to celebrate ‘Cow Hugging Day’ on February 14, which is celebrated as Valentine’s Day. “We all know that cows are the backbone of Indian culture and rural economy, sustaining our lives and representing livestock wealth and biodiversity,” the Animal Welfare Board said in a statement. It is known as ‘Kamdhenu’ and ‘Gomata’ because of its nourishing nature like mother. All enrich humanity’.
