According to mythological belief, Mother Parvati and Lord Shiva got married on the day of Mahashivratri. It is believed that this is why worshiping Mahadev on this auspicious night brings manifold benefits and he is always angry if he is slightly neglected. On the day of Mahashivratri, there are many important rules of chanting, penance, puja-reciting etc. for Shiva Puja. Let’s know about all important rules related to worship of Shiva-Shambhu and Mother Parvati on Mahashivratri.

Rules of Mahashivratri Puja

First rule during Mahashivratri puja is don’t use tulsi in puja even by mistake.

Also, don’t anoint Shivalinga with a conch, otherwise it is bad.

Do not use any metal utensil other than copper utensil during Shiva puja. It is considered very auspicious to offer water to Shivalinga with a copper pot, but only water in the same copper pot is auspicious but milk should not be offered. Avoid making these mistakes during Shiva Puja.

During the puja of Mahashivratri, whatever is offered to the Shivlinga, do not take it as prasad yourself, but distribute it among the people.

Keep the aspect also in mind while doing pooja on Mahashivratri. During Bholenath puja your face should be towards east or north.

The Vajra part (thick part towards the shaft) of the Bela Patra and the Shami Patra offered to the Shivlinga should be separated. After that you have to offer to Shivlinga.

During the Mahashivratri Puja, keep all the materials in advance while anointing the Shivlinga and it is also considered auspicious to light a ghee lamp near the Shivlinga during the Shiva Puja.
