However, 19 opposition parties opposed it and demanded the inauguration of the new parliament building by President Draupadi Murmu. Union Home Minister Amit Shah told a press conference on Wednesday that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the new Parliament building.

He also said that on this occasion a historical tradition will be revived and the foundation stone of the new Parliament building will be laid. Its history is related to the country’s first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah said, ‘A historic tradition will be revived on the occasion of the inauguration of the new Parliament building. It has an ancient tradition behind it and is called Sengal in Tamil. It means rich and historical. Amit Shah also said, ‘A unique incident happened on 14 August 1947. After 75 years, most of the people of the country are not aware of this. Sengal (scepter) has played an important role in our history. This tile became a symbol of the transfer of power from the British’.

He said, ‘When Prime Minister Modi got the information about Sengal, a thorough investigation was done. Then it was decided to present it to the country. The day of the inauguration of the new Parliament building was chosen for this’.

The history of Sengal is related to Jawaharlal Nehru

The history of Sengal is related to the country’s first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. Amit Shah said, ‘At the time of the country’s independence, when Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was asked about the transfer of power, what arrangements should be made for it. After that he spoke to his colleagues and C. Gopalchari was asked. After that Sengal was identified and then Sengal was brought from Tamil Nadu. Pandit Nehru then accepted the sengal (scepter) from the British to hand over power.

Where was Sengal 75 years after independence?

Amit Shah said, ‘Earlier Sengal was kept in the Allahabad museum. But, its history is very old and it is not right to keep it in a museum. It symbolizes the transfer of power from the British and will now be a reflection of the golden age of independence’. He said, ‘During the inauguration of the new Parliament building, Pandits of Tamil Nadu will present the brick to Prime Minister Modi and after that it will be placed near the Lok Sabha Speaker’s seat in Parliament. There can be no holier place than Parliament to establish Sengal.

History of Sengal associated with the Chola Empire

Union Home Minister Amit Shah said, ‘Sengal’s history is very old and it is associated with the Chola Empire. Its important point is that whoever accepts it is expected to rule fairly and justly. The Sengal scepter was carried by the emperor on ceremonial occasions and used to represent his authority’.

The word Sengal is derived from the Sanskrit word ‘shanku’, meaning ‘conch’. Conch is considered very sacred in Hinduism.
